Frutillar is a city located in the Llanquihue Province of the Los Lagos Region. This city is known for its German heritage and for the musical weeks that have made it “the city of music” in Chile. Located on the shore of the Llanquihue Lake, 45 km away from Puerto Montt, Frutillar is a destination that offers beautiful landscapes, German traditions and tranquility for all tourists. The climate in Frutillar does not exceed 25 ° C during the summer, while in winter it oscillates between 4 ° C and 11 ° C, on top of that, the region is characterized by constant rainfall throughout the year.
Frutillar was founded by German settlers who arrived in the territory in the mid-19th century during the presidential period of Manuel Montt. At first, the settlement was concentrated around the bay, but since Frutillar was a mandatory passage between Puerto Montt and Osorno, the settlement was taking life and expanded rapidly. The German immigrants dedicated themselves to agricultural and livestock work, setting up dairies, mills, distilleries, some stores for selling food and implements, all trade developed thanks to communication with neighboring towns.
This city is guarded by volcanoes, enjoys a well-deserved reputation among lovers of classical music for its excellent program of events that is active throughout the year. The Teatro del Lago is a magnificent concert hall by the lake that welcomes the best national and international orchestras and artists. While the Frutillar Musical Weeks stand out as an annual classical music festival that has been held since 1868, it normally lasts for fifteen days and attracts visitors from all over the world. In 1973 the German Colonial Museum was built, a place where you can appreciate the historical process of the city and the Chilean-German cultural exchange that identifies Frutillar.
At the end of the 20th century, Frutillar experienced a rebound in tourist activity, achieved by preserving the concept of the German colonial urban style. Around tourism, the city has been able to develop the hotel, gastronomic, nautical and fishing sectors. Arturo Alessandri Avenue is one of the main avenues in the city and runs along the shore of the lake, there are a series of tourist attractions such as the Catholic Church of the Immaculate Conception and the Lutheran Church, on the west side as well there is the Richter House, the Bernardo Philippi School, the German Club, numerous cafes, shops, hotels and other buildings of interest.
The German culture is clearly manifested in the gastronomy of Frutillar, of which the kuchen or apple strudel stands out, which can be enjoyed on the shores of Lake Llanquihue, or on its black sand beach and crystal clear waters.
